This Week: Cryptic Crosswords Lite - clue: Sewing Sister issue, perhaps? (5 letters, S _ _ _ _ ) Hint: A certain shy, young tongue-twister sister of a bygone era – she could be an “issue,” if anagrammed correctly. Come and learn step-by-step clue-solving skills at Cryptic Crosswords Lite, Tuesdays 1:00-3:00 pm until August 27. *Answer at the bottom of this Update. Salsa Dance Lessons – Starting Wednesday July 17th at 6:00pm till Aug 14th. Cost $5 per class. No experience or partner needed. Wear sneakers. Sign up is required – call, email, or drop in to the Centre. Lunch Around Freddy- Wednesday July 17th at 11:30 am - Ivy’s Diner, 3696 NB-102, Island View. Sign up at the Centre. If you are interested in carpooling, please indicate and include your phone number. We will work to match drives. Forum – Wednesday, July 17 at 1:30. Fraud and Scams presented by Financial and Consumer Commission. Learn how to best protect yourself and others from financial abuse and exploitation, including phone and internet scams. Summer Specials: We encourage members and family members to come and take part in these summer programs, with more to come! These are “drop-in” activities. Stone Painting – We will be painting rocks to add to the Centre’s garden! Wednesday, July 17th, 11:00am. Christmas in July - Snacks, outdoor games, music, and Christmas cheer! Friday, July 19th, 2pm. We will be collecting food bank donations at the door. Our Summer Student, Reece Ronan, will be completing the 8 weeks with us under the NB Summer Student Program on Friday, July 19. We can’t believe how the time has flown by. We are very fortunate in that this is the second year that Reece has been with us; along with volunteering at many of our breakfasts throughout the year and working her magic on posters and placemats. Although much below the 50+, she has become a part of us at the Centre. Thank you, Reece, for your excellent work on and ideas for summer programs. We wish you the best of luck in your final year at St. Thomas University. Please stay in touch. On-going: Auction 45 - Fridays 1:00 pm - Come and join others for games and fun. Community News National Injury Prevention Day is July 5th. By taking proactive measures to prevent falls, older adults can maintain independence and enjoy an active lifestyle by focusing on awareness of injuries that are predictable and preventable. Preventing falls to safeguard independence and well-being (mcmasteroptimalaging.org) CAUTIONARY NOTE: As of June 29: Covid-19 activity in NB is the highest in Canada. About one in every 42 people are currently infected according to Canadian Covid-19 Hazard Index. In the latest update, which covers June 22 to July 5, NB was given a rating of “severe” and a score of 28.2. Everywhere else in Canada was lower.
