Seniors for Climate Change- October 1st is the United Nations International Day of the Older Person, and in Canada, Seniors for Climate are raising their voices in webinars, marches, and gatherings of all kinds to say we want climate action now. Across Canada, 55 communities, including in New Brunswick, have signed up. In Fredericton, three activities are planned:
  1. Join us Tuesday, October 1 at the New Brunswick Legislature from 11 am to noon. Bring a chair (rocking chairs welcome!) and hear songs from the Raging Grannies, join in making a pledge to future generations, and hear how climate change affects older people and what we can do about it. We want to fill the Legislature lawn. Everyone is welcome.

  1. At 12:30, Flag Rasing at City Hall.

  1. At 4 pm we will host a webinar where you will learn how climate change affects the health and safety of older people. This webinar is hosted by the New Brunswick Environment Network and the Fredericton Stepping Stone Senior Centre. Everyone is welcome. To register tinyurl.com/4r9rvuuk

SpacesShared- The University of New Brunswick has partnered with SpacesShared, a platform that connects people who have a spare bedroom in their home with students looking for affordable housing. This initiative aims to provide students with more affordable and accessible housing options.

By leveraging their spare bedrooms, hosts can gain extra income, company, and companionship, and receive assistance with household tasks while providing housing options for UNB students in Fredericton. Students can reduce their monthly rent by completing tasks around the home.  This is one way that UNB is working to address the challenge of affordable student housing in Fredericton.
Aside from increasing the stock of affordable housing in the region, home sharing also:

  • Encourages intergenerational relationships,
  • Helps older adults age at home as students can help with household chores, such as shovelling snow, yard work or running errands,
  • Alleviates social isolation for both hosts and students
  • Provides an opportunity for people to give back and engage with their community.
UNB and SpacesShared invite people who are interested in becoming hosts or seeking more information to visit https://www.unb.ca/studentlife/spaces-shared.html

Aging Care Symposium- The 14th annual Aging Care & Research Symposium. The Symposium takes place on September 26, 2024 at the Fredericton Inn.
The speakers at this year’s Symposium are from long-term care, aging, health and research fields. Registration includes breakfast and lunch as well as great networking opportunities. Student, Senior, and Virtual tickets are available. To register for this event, please click here.  Additional information can be found at: www.agingsymposium.ca.

Parkinson Canada Super walk - Sunday Sept 8th at the Richard J Currie Centre, Fredericton NB. Registration opens at 1:30pm. Event begins at 2:00pm.

Johnston Ave. Senior Centre - If you enjoy playing bridge and want more opportunities to play, drop-in at 112 Johnston Avenue every Friday, from 9:00 am to 12 noon from September 13 to December 20.  No partner required. Participants pay $10 for the season, and players of all levels are welcome!  Please contact Kathryn Baird at 506-260-0605 or email [email protected] for more information.
